Indian roads are busy on every side. Bikes cut in from the left, autos squeeze past on the right, and a lot of trouble happens behind you. A normal dashcam only sees the road ahead. A 4 channel dashcam records all around your car at the same time. This guide explains how it works, who should buy one and what to check before you spend your money.

What is a 4 channel dashcam?

A dashcam (also written dash cam) is a small camera fixed to your windscreen that records while you drive. "Channels" means how many cameras record together:

  • 1 channel: front camera only.
  • 2 channel: front + rear camera.
  • 4 channel: front + three more cameras, so the front, back and sides are all covered.

With four channels, a side-swipe, a scratch in a parking lot or a bike hitting your door is on video, not just what happens in front.

Who needs a 4 channel dashcam?

  • City drivers who face two-wheelers and autos on both sides every day.
  • Taxi, cab and fleet owners who want proof of every incident around the vehicle.
  • Families on highway trips who want complete evidence if something goes wrong.
  • Anyone who parks on the street and wants parking-mode recording from more than one angle.

If you mostly want clear front and rear video, a good 2 channel 4K dashcam is enough and costs less to run. If you want zero blind spots, go for 4 channels.

What to check before you buy

1. Front camera resolution

The front camera captures number plates, so it matters most. Look for 4K at the front. The other cameras can be 1080P.

2. Night video

Most accidents and disputes need clear night footage. Check the image sensor and look at real night samples, not just daytime adverts.

3. GPS

Built-in GPS stamps your speed and location on every clip, which helps with insurance claims and police complaints.

4. Wi-Fi and the app

A 5GHz Wi-Fi connection lets you download clips to your phone quickly without removing the memory card or using mobile data.

5. Parking mode

For 24-hour protection while parked, the dashcam needs a hardwire kit connected to the car's fuse box.

6. Memory card and loop recording

Four cameras fill a card faster. Use a high-endurance microSD card (U3 for 4K). Loop recording overwrites the oldest files, and the G-sensor locks important clips so they are not deleted.

7. Heat and Indian conditions

Cars in India get very hot inside. Choose a brand that tests its dashcams on Indian roads and in Indian summers.

8. Warranty and support in India

Cheap imports often have no local support. Make sure there is a warranty, a replacement policy and a support team you can reach on WhatsApp or phone.

Is a dashcam legal in India?

Yes. No law in India bans using a dashcam in a private car. Mount it behind the rear-view mirror so it does not block your view. Dashcam video can support insurance claims and police complaints. Courts treat it as an electronic record, which may need a certificate under Section 63 of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023.

Quick answers

Is a 4 channel dashcam worth it? Yes, if you drive in crowded cities, run a cab or fleet, or want proof of side and rear incidents. For simple front and rear recording, a 2 channel 4K dashcam is enough.

How do I install it? It plugs into the car's power socket, and the cables run along the headliner and pillars. Parking mode needs a hardwire kit.
